About the Book

Peace is not built in conference rooms or treaty negotiations alone—it begins in the everyday choices we make with our families, neighbors, and communities. In Peacebuilding Starts at Home, veteran peacebuilder Charles Hauss argues that the path to a more just and harmonious society lies in how we live our daily lives.

Drawing on insights from social science, philosophy, and decades of hands-on work in conflict resolution, Hauss offers a practical framework for weaving peace into the fabric of ordinary experience. From building trust at the dinner table to cultivating compassion in schools and workplaces, he shows how “tiny islands of change” can connect and grow into a cultural movement with global reach.

Part memoir, part field guide, and part call to action, this book challenges us to rethink peace not as an abstract ideal but as an achievable practice. Whether you are a community leader, educator, activist, or simply someone longing for a less divided world, Peacebuilding Starts at Home provides both the inspiration and the tools to begin.

Why this book?

You don’t have to wait for world leaders to build peace.
I wrote Peacebuilding Starts at Home with you in mind. The individuals and organizations discussed in these pages are already working to make our country and our world less divided. But they can’t do it on their own. They need partners and they need them now.
And that starts with you.
Literally you.

In these pages, I will introduce you to people who are already changing how Americans live, work, and listen to one another—and invite you to join them. You won’t find a lot of abstract ideas here. Instead, I concentrate on real stories, practical tools, and short exercises (yes, homework assignments) that can help you build peace in your family, workplace, community, and country. It is an open invitation and call to action. Because peace doesn’t just happen. We build it. Together. At home.
And that starts with you.
Literally you.

About the Author

Charles “Chip” Hauss has spent his career at the intersection of activism, scholarship, and policy, working to make peace a practical reality in everyday life. He is the Government Liaison at the Alliance for Peacebuilding, where he also serves on the board of directors, and plays a leading role in shaping the field’s future by connecting policymakers, educators, and communities with innovative peacebuilding programs.

The author of more than a dozen books on conflict, politics, and peace, Hauss is known for bringing clarity and optimism to some of the world’s most complex challenges. His last book, Security 2.0: Dealing With Global Wicked Problems, argues that today’s intertwined crises—from climate change to political polarization—cannot be solved in isolation but demand a paradigm shift in how societies govern themselves. Rather than despair, Hauss points to the concrete ways people are already driving change, offering readers both inspiration and practical steps to join them.

With decades of experience as an activist, educator, and thought leader, Hauss continues to champion the idea that peacebuilding isn’t the work of a few elites—it’s a shared journey that begins at home.
