At A Glance

J. P. Zenger Books is committed to the highest standards of editorial integrity, publishing quality, and intellectual independence. This policy is guided by the following principles:

  • Mission-Driven Publishing: We publish only books that align with our mission and that we believe make a meaningful contribution to public discourse, culture, history, or the exchange of ideas.
  • Rigorous Editorial Review: Every manuscript undergoes a structured editorial evaluation and is accepted only if it meets our standards for originality, quality, accuracy, and long-term significance.
  • Independent Editorial Judgment: Editorial decisions are made independently and are based solely on editorial merit, without regard to political, financial, or external pressures.
  • Human Editorial Responsibility: While artificial intelligence may be used as a limited editorial tool, all editorial decisions, manuscript evaluations, and publication approvals are made by human editors, and authors remain fully responsible for the integrity of their work.
  • Commitment to Excellence: Every book published by J. P. Zenger Books receives careful editorial development, professional copyediting, and thorough proofreading to ensure it meets our standards for quality, accuracy, and craftsmanship.

Editorial Philosophy

J. P. Zenger Books publishes books that deserve to exist.

We are an independent publisher committed to identifying, developing, and publishing works of enduring value. We believe that books remain one of the most powerful ways to advance ideas, preserve history, challenge assumptions, and deepen public understanding.

Our imprint is named for John Peter Zenger, whose defense of a free press helped establish the principle that truth deserves publication. In that tradition, we seek authors whose work contributes meaningfully to public discourse, intellectual life, culture, or the historical record.

Because we publish a deliberately small list each year, every manuscript receives substantial editorial attention. We do not publish to fill a catalog or chase trends. We publish only books that meet our standards for originality, quality, and long-term significance.

Editorial Review Process

Every manuscript considered for publication undergoes a structured editorial review.

1. Initial Editorial Evaluation

The publisher conducts an initial assessment to determine whether a manuscript aligns with the mission of J. P. Zenger Books. During this review we consider:

  • Alignment with the imprint’s editorial mission and publishing strategy
  • Originality of the central idea or contribution
  • Quality of writing and organization
  • Intended audience and market positioning
  • Potential cultural, historical, or intellectual significance

Manuscripts that do not meet these criteria are declined before entering the formal editorial process.

2. Editorial Review

Promising manuscripts undergo a substantive editorial evaluation. Depending on the project, this may include consultation with outside subject-matter experts, experienced editors, or other publishing professionals.

The review considers:

  • Accuracy and credibility
  • Strength of evidence and documentation, where applicable
  • Clarity of argument or narrative
  • Structure and organization
  • Author expertise and authority
  • Contribution to existing literature
  • Commercial viability consistent with the mission of the imprint

Recommendations may include acceptance, revision and resubmission, or rejection.

3. Editorial Development

Accepted manuscripts work collaboratively with the publisher and editors through one or more rounds of developmental editing. This process focuses on improving structure, clarity, pacing, organization, and overall effectiveness while preserving the author’s voice and intent.

Major revisions are reviewed before a manuscript advances to production.

4. Copyediting and Proofreading

Before publication, every manuscript receives professional copyediting and proofreading appropriate to the work. Editorial review includes:

  • Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style
  • Internal consistency
  • Citation and reference review where applicable
  • Fact-checking of readily verifiable information
  • Final proof review before publication

Quality Standards

J. P. Zenger Books publishes only manuscripts that satisfy the following standards:

  • Original and substantive contribution
  • Clear, engaging, and effective writing
  • Appropriate factual accuracy and documentation
  • Ethical publishing practices, including respect for copyright and intellectual property
  • Professional editorial and production quality
  • Alignment with the mission and editorial vision of the imprint

Meeting these standards is required for publication regardless of commercial potential.

Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions are made independently by J. P. Zenger Books. Acceptance or rejection is based solely on editorial merit, alignment with the imprint’s mission, quality standards, and publishing strategy.

Financial considerations, political viewpoints, or external interests do not determine editorial decisions. We publish works representing a range of perspectives, provided they are presented honestly, responsibly, and with intellectual integrity.

Artificial Intelligence Policy

J. P. Zenger Books believes that authorship is fundamentally a human endeavor. We publish the ideas, experiences, judgment, and creativity of people—not machines.

Authors may use artificial intelligence tools for limited research, brainstorming, transcription, copyediting, or other editorial assistance. However, authors remain solely responsible for the originality, accuracy, attribution, and integrity of everything submitted for publication. Artificial intelligence may assist the writing process, but it may not substitute for an author’s intellectual contribution.

The use of AI-generated material does not relieve an author of responsibility for:

  • factual accuracy;
  • proper attribution and citation;
  • originality and copyright compliance;
  • obtaining permission for copyrighted material; and
  • compliance with applicable laws and ethical standards.

J. P. Zenger Books reserves the right to request disclosure of significant AI use during manuscript preparation when it is relevant to evaluating the work or its originality.

Our editorial staff may also use AI tools in limited ways to improve efficiency—for example, to assist with copyediting, indexing, transcription, accessibility, or administrative tasks. Final editorial judgments, acquisitions decisions, developmental editing, copyediting, and publication decisions are made by human editors.

Every book published by J. P. Zenger Books is reviewed, edited, and approved by human editorial professionals. Editorial responsibility for the finished work always rests with the publisher and the author.

Commitment to Authors

Publishing is a collaborative process. J. P. Zenger Books is committed to working closely with authors to produce books of lasting quality. We believe strong editing strengthens an author’s work while respecting the author’s voice, perspective, and creative vision.

Every book we publish reflects our commitment to thoughtful editorial judgment, careful craftsmanship, and the enduring importance of the written word.
